BATON ROUGE — The Louisiana Art and Science Museum has launched a sensory-friendly program aimed at making the museum more accessible to people who experience lights, sounds and crowds differently.

Museum leaders say the goal is to open the space to visitors who may be on the autism spectrum or otherwise sensitive to the typical museum environment.

"Our mission is to inspire creativity, encourage discovery and allow individuals to foster the pursuit of knowledge," said museum president Karen Soniat. "And that means all individuals."

Museum leadership says visitors' response has been positive. 

"It's been very well received both by families and individuals," Soniat said.

The Leo family, who do not have a child on the spectrum but have friends who do, attended to show support for the program. They say it helps make community spaces more welcoming for everyone.

"I think everyone wants to be a part of the community and participate however they can, so it's nice how there is something for everyone," said Cecilia Leo.

Nicholas Leo said the program also creates a broader learning opportunity.

"I think it's a good opportunity for people in Baton Rouge to learn," Nicholas said.

The family hopes the idea spreads beyond the museum's walls.

"I would love to see this program be extended to more businesses throughout the city," Cecilia said.
