BATON ROUGE — After LSU Police named an 18-year-old as a suspect in an initial report of an alleged rape last week, a local attorney on Monday said his client was named through a clerical error that has been repeated in local news coverage over the past week.

LSU Police on Thursday said it was investigating an alleged rape at upperclassman housing along Nicholson Drive. The initial report named 18-year-old Terrance Mahomes as a suspect in the first-degree rape of a 19-year-old victim. That incident reportedly occurred on Sept. 5 and was submitted to LSU police last Monday.

Mahomes’ attorney Jarrett Ambeau, with Ambeau Law Firm, now says LSU was mistaken when it named Mahomes in the report.

“No arrest warrant was ever issued for Mr. Mahomes. He was never arrested, and he has never been charged with any crime,” Ambeau writes in a prepared statement. “Mr. Mahomes was also never investigated for first degree rape. That description came from a clerical error in an initial police report and was repeated in news coverage—the report has been corrected by the LSU police. It has not been fully corrected in the public record.”

Further, Ambreau says Mahomes voluntarily cooperated with investigators and shared messages between himself and the reported victim. He maintains that the encounter was consensual, Ambreau says, and that the investigation is closed, no charges were filed and that the alleged victim has stopped her pursuit of criminal charges.

When asked if Mahomes' naming was a mistake, LSU Chief Communications Officer Meg Sunstrom said on Monday afternoon that the university did not have any information it could share.

“LSU does not have any information we can share other than the report that was issued (and released to you guys) last week,” Sunstrom wrote over email.
