DENHAM SPRINGS — Livingston Parish is honoring crossing guard Katy Wells who was fatally struck in April while directing traffic outside Gray's Creek Elementary School.

The Livingston Parish Council designated Friday, Oct. 16, as "Mrs. Katy Wells Day" to honor her memory ahead of her birthday on Oct. 18.

Additionally, signs will be installed along a section of Highway 16, renamed the "Katy Wells Memorial Crossing Corridor", to commemorate her service.

Wells was struck by a truck during the afternoon of April 30. Following the crash, 64-year-old Darren Goudeau was arrested on vehicular homicide and DWI charges.

Since her death, speed limits on roads surrounding Gray's Creek Elementary have been reduced. Memorials, including a mural outside another school she used to work at, have also been dedicated to Wells, who worked as a crossing guard for four decades.
