Lawmaker suggests a camp to segregate Syrian refugees in US
PROVIDENCE - A Republican state senator says Syrian refugees should be segregated in a camp if Rhode Island accepts them.
WPRI-TV reports Sen. Elaine Morgan emailed a member of the public Tuesday and the message was inadvertently sent to lawmakers.
Morgan joined other local Republicans in saying the Democratic governor should refuse to host Syrian refugees after the Paris attacks.
Morgan says if refugees are allowed in, a camp could segregate them and protect U.S. citizens.
She wrote that "the Muslim religion and philosophy is to murder, rape and decapitate" non-Muslims.
Morgan says she mistakenly sent the message before editing it. She says she meant to limit her characterization to "the fanatical Muslim religion and philosophy."
State GOP Chairman Brandon Bell says many people are concerned, but Morgan expressed herself poorly.
