Kennedy suggests Gov. Edwards scaring people into supporting tax increase
BATON ROUGE - State Treasurer John Kennedy likened Governor John Bel Edwards' address on the budget to scare tactics to sell a tax proposal to fill a growing state budget deficit.
"Governor Edwards is planning to implement the largest tax increase in Louisiana history," Kennedy said. "It will wreck our economy."
Kennedy's address followed a rare, state-wide address by Edwards. Edwards asked people to think of the state while making opinions on how to solve the budget crisis.
"We don't have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem," Kennedy said. "We have way too many expensive generals and not enough foot soldiers."
Before both presentations, the state said it was suspending the TOPS program that pays tuition for Louisiana high school students to state universities.
Cutting TOPS while keeping able-bodied, childless adults on the welfare rolls? You're either serious about Louisiana's future or you're not.

Kennedy is also a candidate for U.S. Senate, hoping to replace U.S. Senator David Vitter who announced he'd leave politics after losing the gubernatorial election to Edwards late last year.
