BATON ROUGE - A U.S. Supreme Court decision shifted the course of Louisiana politics, and now, months after the election was suspended, candidates for the sixth congressional district will finally see their names on the ballot.

Angry, public protests at the state capitol may have subsided. Still, dissatisfaction over the redrawn congressional maps, which leave only one federal majority-minority district in Louisiana, continues to this day.

Despite vocal opposition, lawmakers approved a map that favored Republicans and left only one majority-minority district, turning the second district, the sixth, into a predominantly white, conservative district.

Analyst James Hartman says the effects of all this political battle will be felt for years to come.

“The impacts will be felt for years to come, and once we see what the outcomes of the elections are, when we see if the madness of gerrymandering rampantly continues between census years,” Hartman said.

Now ten different candidates will face off during the fall election, with early voting running from Oct. 20 to Oct. 26 and election day Nov. 3.
