BATON ROUGE - After Heisman-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels issued a cease-and-desist to LSU over his name, image and likeness, he issued a statement on his social media saying his focus has been on training camp with the Washington Commanders.

Daniels, on Aug. 5, sent a letter to LSU Athletic Director Verge Ausberry saying LSU could no longer use Daniels' name, image and likeness. Daniels, who won the Heisman with LSU in 2023, wore the number 5; ESPN reported that the issue stemmed from the number was issued to cornerback D.J. Pickett.

On his Instagram story, Daniels said that he has been "locked in on training camp," with that being his focus.

"I have a lot of gratitude for my time at LSU, and I'm proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there," Daniels said. "Obviously there are issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately."

Daniels said his sole personal purpose is on Commanders football, also saying the business of football is "unique" and he trusts this all can be resolved.

LSU Head Coach Lane Kiffin commented on issuing the number to Pickett last week, saying that the number had been promised to him during recruiting. He said Thursday, after the cease-and-desist was reported, that last week's comment is "the comment that [he] had, and we are moving forward."

ESPN's report also said that Daniels' representatives believe LSU has treated him differently than Burrow, particularly regarding the handling of their respective jersey numbers.

Pickett told reporters the number was something he was promised after being recruited by former head coach Brian Kelly.

"About the number situation, I wore the number my whole life since I was four years old. It was the number I was promised," Pickett said. "And I wish Jayden the best."

LSU fan Brian Seaglund offered a different take on the situation.

"He did real good here, so that's all," Seaglund said. "I mean, he's got the right to his name, but why wouldn't you want your alma mater to be part of your history?"

LSU student Akye Clay said Daniels should shift his attention to the NFL.

"Honestly, if you ask me, Jayden shouldn't even be worried about the number 5 no more," Clay said. "He's in the big leagues; he could worry about whatever takes place in the big leagues. Like if somebody was trying to take his number in the big leagues, but this LSU, this college ball, like just like DJ Pickett had a number."

There are certain rules for having a jersey retired at LSU. The athlete must have competed at least five years prior and had truly outstanding accomplishments, including winning the Heisman Trophy like Daniels. Daniels won that award three years ago.

Burrow's number has not been retired either, even though it has been five years since he played and he was also named a Heisman Trophy winner.

Daniels played at LSU from 2022-23 and won the Heisman Trophy in 2023 after throwing for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns while rushing for 1,134 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was selected No. 2 overall by the Washington Commanders in the 2024 NFL Draft.
