HAMMOND — A Hammond Police officer has been arrested after at least two domestic violence incidents, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office said Monday.

According to deputies, on Sept. 24, a woman reported an alleged altercation with Officer Corey Bergeron at his home in Robert earlier that day. Deputies later found evidence related to at least one prior incident involving Bergeron and the same victim. 

Warrants were then issued for the 28-year-old officer's arrest. 

Bergeron was taken into custody Monday morning at the Tangipahoa Parish courthouse. He was booked on one count each of battery of a dating partner with strangulation and battery of a dating partner. His bond was set at $50,000.

Additional investigations are underway involving other potential victims, deputies said

Bergeron is the son of current Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron, who said that all of the proper protocols were being followed during the sheriff's investigation and released the following statement Monday evening: 

As a father, I will say that I have personally watched multiple videos and read many text messages involving my son, Corey, and I believe those videos and messages raise serious questions about the truth of the allegations made against my son. Also, it is extremely difficult to watch your child go through a situation such as this.

At the same time, I recognize that this matter must be handled through the proper investigative and legal processes. I believe the facts will ultimately come to light and Corey will be exonerated of all charges. Our family will continue to support Corey as we work through this difficult situation and we look forward to a final resolution.
