MANCHAC - Days after initially reporting that eight people died in a chaotic chain reaction crash on I-55, the agency in charge of investigating the collision has determined that only seven people were actually killed.

Louisiana State Police made the surprising announcement Friday, just a day after identifying seven people killed in the pileup near Manchac. Sources told WBRZ that investigators were using forensic technology in an effort to identify additional remains found at the scene which were presumed to be that of an eighth victim.

"Due to the intense fire and the extensive wreckage, the initial investigation led Troopers to believe that there were a total of eight (8) victims. In collaboration with the St. John the Baptist Parish Coroner’s Office, Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office, and The LSU Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services (FACES) Laboratory, it has been conclusively determined that there are no additional or unknown victims of this tragic incident other than seven (7) identified victims," the agency said in a statement Friday.

The St. John the Baptist Parish Coroner's Office released the following names on Thursday.

-James Fleming, 87 years old, Lake St. Louis, Missouri

-Nakia Gaines (dad), 49 years old New Orleans, LA

-Mason Gaines (son), 6 years old Madisonville, LA

-Fernando Francisco DeMoraes, 49 years old, Chalmette, LA

-Jose Elias Valle - 37 years old, Chalmette, LA

-Corinne Hebert - 21 years old, Plaquemine, LA

-Quatab Singh Negi - 47 years old, Hammond, LA

As of Thursday, the northbound side of the interstate remains closed at the crash scene. The southbound side has partially reopened.
