PORT VINCENT - A high-ranking member of the Baton Rouge Police Department is on paid leave today, after getting arrested over the weekend.

Chief Investigator Chris Nakamoto has confirmed Lt. Charles Eddleman was arrested for aggravated second degree battery on Sunday. It stemmed from a bar fight that sent one patron to the hospital.

According to the probable cause document, Eddleman grabbed the victim from behind and slammed him head first onto a concrete floor.

The document says Eddleman slammed the victim's head onto the floor several times, delivering several punches to the head, causing the victim to lose consciousness.

Investigators said Eddleman then picked up the victim and dropped his limp body back to the floor multiple times.

We've learned Eddleman was recently promoted to the position of lieutenant with Baton Rouge Police. He was off duty at the time of the incident. Eddleman has been employed with the Baton Rouge Police for 23 years.

A check of his record reveals he had a DWI arrest back in May of 2004. He was also cited for reckless operation and negligent injuring. He pleaded no contest in October of 2004, according to the Livingston Parish District Attorney's Office. Then, in 2006, Eddleman was named in a federal lawsuit, accused of using excessive force.

We will have updates on this story on later editions of WBRZ News 2.
