AMITE — Salvaged steel from the World Trade Center was melted at a facility in Louisiana before being turned into a U.S. Navy warship, according to a report by the Digital Visual Information Distribution System. 

The USS New York, along with two other ships, was commissioned to honor victims, first responders, and service members following the September 11th attacks. 

The bow of the ship incorporated 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center, with the steel being melted at the Amite Foundry in Louisiana. 

USS New York's sister ship, the USS Arlington, honored the 184 victims killed when Flight 77 struck the Pentagon. Recovered structural steel and artifacts from the Pentagon are displayed in the ship's museum along with artifacts donated by Arlington County first responders. 

The USS Somerset honored the 40 passengers and crew of United Flight 93 who fought back against hijackers over Pennsylvania by using 22 tons of steel recovered from a dragline bucket near the crash site to construct the ship's bow. All 40 victims' names are inscribed inside the ship's memorial room.
