Tax preparer goes MIA, woman wants documents returned

UPDATE On Tuesday, Mary Jane Spruel tells 2 On Your Side that she received her documents. The tax preparer originally said she'd drop the documents off at Spruel's home Monday evening. Several messages were sent to Spruel and 2 On Your Side from the tax preparer saying she wouldn't make it to the arranged location. Spruel offered to collect the material herself. She has the documents back but is still missing the money she paid for the work.

BATON ROUGE - One woman says her tax preparer has been dodging her for months and all she wants is her paperwork and money back.

Mary Jane Spruel says she has filed complaints with the BBB, Attorney General, and Secretary of State offices.

"I don't know where she is," Spruel said.

In May, Spruel says she handed over three years worth of tax documents and $850 to Larissa DeRouen of GTR Accounting and Small Business Services. Spruel thought her taxes would be filed by now, but they haven't been. For several months she has tried to meet up with DeRouen to get those documents back.

"I have asked her over and over and over again to return my documents, she has given me one story after the other," Spruel said.

DeRouen was not at her address Wednesday morning. When 2 On Your Side rang her doorbell, she called and told Brittany Weiss that she's in the hospital, but would return Spruel's documents on Monday.

It's a tentative date that Spruel says she has heard before.

"She even said she was on her way last Saturday, this is about the 20th time and she's told me about 50 lies," Spruel said.

A time and location has been arranged for DeRouen to return the documents to Spruel. This story will be updated.
