Springfield city leaders replace chief of police

SPRINGFIELD - City leaders replaced the police chief Wednesday night.

James Jones resigned after taking a plea deal for charges involving a DWI cover-up. Part of the deal was that he had to quit his job.

Jones submitted his letter of resignation and the alderman voted to appoint Steve Meyers as interim chief. Meyers has been with the Springfield Police Department for about eight months and is the former patrol sergeant of the Harahan Police Department.

There were a number of applicants for the job of police chief, but in light of the recent situation the town decided to take a step back and develop a new law outlining how the chief is selected.

"We need to have a formal job description, pay scales, all the things to make it understandable by all parties who are involved, either wanting the job or actually monitoring the job," said Alderman L.D. Barringer.

Mayor Charles Martin faces similar charges in the DWI incident and has a similar plea deal in front of him. His trial date is scheduled for next month.
