McKenna and Mary Lou
BATON ROUGE - Mary Lou Retton jokes about her daughter, LSU sophomore McKenna Kelley, and her precocious attitude as beginning gymnast.
"When (McKenna) was little, we were tumbling and flipping, she was practicing a roundoff, and I told her to put her feet together quicker" says Retton, laughing. "She looked at me and said 'what do you know?'"
Retton knew enough to win the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal, the first-ever for team USA, but of course that was before Kelley was born.
"Growing up I always knew my mom was Mary Lou but I don't think I understood it and started doing what she was doing," says Kelley.
Now, Retton attends Kelley's meets and cheers her daughter on, the way she was once cheered on by all of America.
"She opened the door for gymnasts like me," says Kelley, who earned All America honors in the 2017 National Championships.
