Diabetes Alert Day
BATON ROUGE - Today is National Diabetes Alert Day. One in 10 people are diabetic and one in every three people are pre-diabetic. Courtney Brock and Renee Puyau from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center stopped by 2une In to talk about healthy food choices for diabetics.
A lot of people order salads for lunch at restaurants thinking they're getting the healthiest option, however a lot of salads also come with toppings that make the calories add up.
Instead of ordering a salad right off the menu, try asking for it without all of the extras, such as: bacon bits, fried chicken, and cheese. The salad dressing can also be one of the most unhealthy parts of a salad. Try ordering your dressing on the side and only using half of what they give you, this will help make your meal a lot healthier.
"With these changes, you're going to save about 700 calories and 70 grams of fat," said Puyah, a registered dietician at Pennington.
You can also look at the lunch menus, which generally come in smaller portions than the dinner sizes. Never be afraid to ask if you can substitute something for a healthier option.
