Denham Marshal's Office warns parents of leaving kids in hot cars
DENHAM SPRINGS - A sticky effort is happening in Livingston Parish to warn parents and guardians about leaving kids in hot cars.
What Denham Springs Marshal Jerry Denton is hoping to provide for parents is a simple reminder in the form of a sticker as we continue to brave these heated days.
"More and more every year, we've been kind of tracking this and already this year we've had ten deaths across the U.S. That's 10 children too many," said Marshal Denton.
The Denham Springs Marshal's Office kicked off its child safety awareness program with car stickers on Tuesday. The office wants it to be a reminder to parents to not leave any child behind in a hot car. It's also an alert if someone sees a child left in a car to call the police. The marshal's message is simple: "Heat kills...Act Fast... Save a life."
"The ones that concern me more than anything are those who intentionally leave their children in the car," said Marshal Denton.
Just a few weeks ago, he said two children including a two and four-year-old were left in a car unsupervised with only the window cracked open. A situation that he believes could have turned tragic, if no one contacted police.
"Even leaving your children in the car running could still be a hazard and safety issue," said Robin Miceli, parent of two children.
"There's been times I have seen people left in the car, ts is easy to make a quick phone call because of safety possibilities....an abuse or neglect issue ...you never know what'll happen to them," said Miceli.
Marshall Denton said he plans to pass stickers out at daycares and give them out to other law enforcement agencies.
Ten deaths across the nation have been attributed to children left in unattended vehicles this year. That includes a 22-month-old left in van at a Baton Rouge daycare.
Anyone can pick up the stickers at the Denham Springs Marshal's Office.
