Vehicle engulfed in flames after striking tree in Covington, one person killed

ST. TAMMANY PARISH- Deputies say one man has died after a single-vehicle crash occurred Saturday night.

According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, the incident took place in Natchez Trace subdivision around 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the Covington area.

Officials say the vehicle exited the roadway and struck a tree. Witnesses were able to pull the driver, 36-year-old Samuel Collins of Ponchatoula, from the vehicle before it became engulfed in flames.

Collins was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Routine toxicology reports are pending. Deputies do believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.
