TICKFAW – State police say one man is dead after fleeing Hammond Police then causing a crash on LA 1065 in Tickfaw Wednesday morning.

According to Louisiana State Police, the crash happened on LA 1065 near Sims Lane just before noon Wednesday.

Hammond Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a Ford Focus driven by 21-year-old Darious Rashaad Ashton. Police said Ashton fled from officers on the northbound lane before eventually turning onto Sims Lane.

When trying to re-enter onto LA 1065, police say Ashton did not stop at a stop sign and was struck by a Honda Accord. Ashton’s car was struck a second time by a dump truck traveling in the northbound lane.

Investigators say Ashton was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He received serious injuries and later died at an area hospital.

The driver of the dump truck suffered minor injuries and was treated. The driver of the Honda Accord was not injured.

Blood samples were taken for analysis. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
