BATON ROUGE - A suspect was arrested last night in connection with the shooting that left an East Feliciana Parish school board member dead in his car on Wenonah Street.

Police announced Friday the arrest of 19-year-old Jacquez Tremaine Griffin.

Police reported that he was booked Thursday night for first degree murder of 34-year-old Broderick Brooks of Jackson, LA.

According to autopsy reports, Brooks’ cause of death was a result of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and upper extremities.

Brooks was found on May 23 dead in the front seat of his car in the 3200 block of Wenonah Street. According to the police report, responding officers found three .40 caliber gun shell casings at the crime scene. The glove box of the car Brooks was in was found opened with the contents thrown about on the front passenger seat and on the ground outside of the passenger door of the car.

Griffin also stated that the gun detectives found in his home was the same gun that was used in the crime.

Griffin has been booked on a charge of first degree murder.

According to arrest records, Griffin was previously arrested in April 2015 for armed robbery.

Meanwhile, in the neighborhood today, people said they are being held hostage by a group of trouble makers.

Toya Hayes is familiar with the heartache that comes with living in a high crime area.

"My nephew has been killed," Hayes said. "My little cousin and one of close friends just within the past year. Three young men all dead for no reason."

Her neighborhood is targeted by the BRAVE Team. It's a highly specialized group of law enforcement trained to eliminate violence.

"We don't have vehicles so you walk with a knife to protect yourself," Hayes said.

Her sentiments are echoed by others, like Eddie Bradford.

"I'm concerned I might be next," the 84-year old said.

Despite the fear, city leaders said crime fighting initiatives are working. Today, murders are down by five compared to where we were last year, according to District Attorney Hillar Moore. He adds, crimes like robberies, rapes, and burglaries are also down a fraction.

People like Deswin Harden said times have changed, and people have stopped settling their differences by talking things out.

"All they want to do is shoot, not be a man about it," Harden said. They feel like they pick up a gun and they a man."

The BRAVE Team started in late 2012. Grant funding will run out in about a year, and it can be reapplied for.
