NEW ORLEANS - City officials in New Orleans say they’re ramping up security plans for upcoming Pride celebrations in the city after the horrific events in Orlando last weekend.

New Orleans Pride celebrations will kick off Friday. Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Superintendent Michael Harrison, FBI and Louisiana State Police have come together to discuss security measures.

"I want to assure the people of New Orleans that this team has worked on many, many major special events. I will recall for that we hosted the first Super Bowl after 9/11," Landrieu said. "We have a very experienced force."

The New Orleans Police Department will be staffed at full capacity in the French Quarter over the upcoming weekend.

"We have 100 percent staffing with our Special Operations Division in the event we need to deploy a SWAT deployment. We will be ready at 100 percent staffing.  That will be coupled with our street gang unit that also has SWAT-trained members,” said Harrison.

State Police said they’ll increase staffing as well, and they’ve been training for active shooting situations.

The FBI says there are currently no credible threats for the area, so the discussion of security details is largely a precautionary measure.

A press conference was held in New Orleans on Thursday to discuss safety concerns and police preparations ahead of the Pride celebration in the Big Easy.
