MARKSVILLE - The second of a pair of Marksville deputy city marshals that took part in a deadly officer-involved shooting in November may be released from jail as early as Wednesday, according to the sheriff’s office.

That marshal, Derrick Stafford, and Norris Greenhouse Jr. were taken into custody on Nov. 6 after the duo was accused in connection with shooting and killing 6-year-old Jeremy Mardis and seriously injuring the boy’s father, Christopher Few. Greenhouse and Stafford were with two other part time marshals when the shooting happened at the end of a pursuit that began when the marshals tried to serve Few with a warrant.

Stafford and Greenhouse were booked on one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder each.

State Police would investigate the shooting, finding that there were no weapons inside of Few’s vehicle as initially claimed. Investigators also couldn’t locate the warrant the marshals were supposedly trying to serve when the chase began. It was also later revealed that Few had exited his vehicle with his hands up, and a total of 18 rounds were fired at the scene by the two deputies.

Greenhouse’s family secured a $1 million property bond to bond the man out toward the end of November. Stafford has remained in jail as his family did not have access to the resources necessary to secure a similar bond. Now, Stafford's lawyers indicate that his family has secured enough property to up for a bond in the same amount. All of the necessary paperwork has been filed under seal, which means it is not open to public record. Regardless of whether or not he bonds out, Stafford will still appear in an Avoyelles Parish court on Sept. 26 when he is trial is scheduled to get underway.

After we posted our original story, Stafford's attorney called WBRZ and confirmed it was likely his client would be released sometime Wednesday afternoon, with paperwork processing beginning early in the morning.
