Police identify suspect in overnight police chase
BATON ROUGE - A police officer fired at a man following a police chase overnight.
Baton Rouge Police stopped a vehicle for possibly being operated by a drunk driver shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday on North Acadian near the hospital in Mid City. While the officer was performing a sobriety test on the driver, the front seat passenger slid over and took control of the vehicle and sped away.
Officers gave chase but the driver – who was a man – eventually stopped and tried to run away on Lynn Street between Prescott Road and Mohican Street. It was there, police said, where the man they were chasing had a weapon in his hand and turned toward the pursuing officer who fired. A Baton Rouge Police spokesperson said Friday morning, it was unclear if the suspect was shot and he was able to run and escape.
Police dogs and the city police helicopter were used to try and track him down.
UPDATE: Friday afternoon, police released the name of the suspect. He was identified as Stanley Yates, 19.
Three or four women in the vehicle were questioned, the department said. No information was provided about the potentially intoxicated initial driver.
