BATON ROUGE - Police say a 76-year-old woman was beaten to death by her boyfriend after he got high on drugs Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, Lovie Variste was found dead in the rear bedroom of her Lone Oak Drive home just after 1 o'clock. Officers arrested her boyfriend, 49-year-old Eric Augustus, who called police and admitted to attacking Variste after he smoked mojo.

Augustus told police that after he smoked the drug, "god spoke to him" and told him to kill. Investigators believe he then used several objects around the home to beat her.

Augustus appeared hysterical as he was walked by police outside LSP headquarters Wednesday afternoon.

"Now you see the end result," BRPD Spokesperson L'Jean McKneely said as Augustus was taken away. "He has some sense of remorse, and he's crying because he's back to himself and realizing what he has done."

Police say the two had been dating since shortly after her husband's death about 4-5 months ago.

According to her Facebook, Variste worked as a cook at LSU.

Augustus has been booked on one count of first-degree murder.
