There were two consecutive Sunday's of tornado damage in Walthall County this April. Today marks the 110th anniversary of the “1908 Tornado.”  The Tornado Project reported that this was a major tornadic event when the twister touched down in the community of Weiss in northwest Livingston Parish.  It ranks seventh on the list of Top Ten List of Killer Tornadoes. The tornado was approximately two miles wide, moved east-northeast into St. Helena Parish, then to Tangipahoa Parish and leaving the state from Washington Parish.  In Dennis MIlls, two people were killed with the worst destruction and loss-of-life in Amite with 29 deaths and four more near Wilmer.  When the tornado finally left Louisiana and Mississippi, 143 people died, 400 were injured and 1,935 residents were homeless. From twisters to shakers... Earthquakes have made headlines in San Francisco, Anchorage and Mexico City. On April 22, 2009, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake was recorded near Centreville, Alabama, about 40 miles southwest of Birmingham.  Another earthquake shook Birmingham on April 23, 2003, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale.  Louisiana has experienced episodes of earthquakes.  On October 19, 1930 one rattled Napoleonville with effects reported in Allemands, Donaldsonville, Franklin, Morgan City and White Castle.  Residents reported overturned objects, shaken trees and cracked plaster. Other area quakes include a magnitude 3.8 reading near Greenville, MS on June 4, 1967. On November 19, 1958, another shook houses and rattled windows in Baton Rouge. Geologists at LSU note that the Baton Rouge fault is a growth fault, not resulting in measurable earthquakes.
