BATON ROUGE- The Federal Traffic Safety Administration is considering making seat belts mandatory on school buses.

Safety administrators say school districts need to work with bus manufacturers and the government to implement the safety belts.

But, school leaders say some of the details still need to be finalized.

"I don't think it's somthing that is going to happen in the next year," said East Baton Rouge School Superintendent, Warren Drake. "But, if it's something that happens in five or ten years and helps kids become more safe while transporting to school, then it's something we'd be for."

Drake says if the seatbelts become mandatory, they will be paid for with federal grants.
