Man accused in The Cottages shooting now faces murder charges
BATON ROUGE - One of the men arrested in connection with a deadly shooting at The Cottages apartment complex in April now faces murder charges, according to BRPD.
Police said the charges against 22-year-old Ernest Felton were upgraded to second degree murder and obstruction in connection with the shooting deaths of two women on Apr. 10 at the apartments located just off Burbank Drive.
Investigators said they were able to obtain additional information while further examining the case which led to the upgrade in Felton’s arrest charge.
Felton’s charges were upgraded from attempted second degree murder in connection with the shooting of 25-year-old Brandon Henderson.
Henderson was arrested and booked into parish jail Tuesday morning on charges of two counts of second degree murder and illegal use of a weapon after he admitted to firing the shots that would eventually initiate the deadly gunfire between him and Felton.
Southern students Lashuntae Benton and Annette January were shot and killed in the crossfire. January was a freshmen and Benton was a sophomore at Southern University.
