BATON ROUGE - LSU's weekend off is over, and the Tigers are preparing for Southern Miss Saturday at Tiger Stadium.

The 6:30 contest is the first in a series of three home games at LSU. Next up are Ole Miss (Oct. 22) and Alabama (Nov. 5). LSU would have been the visiting team had the Tigers played Florida Saturday. The game was postponed due to Hurricane Matthew.

Joe Alleva, LSU's Athletic Director, said at a lunchtime news conference Monday, LSU will not cancel its home game slated for November 19th.  There were rumblings that Florida and LSU could make up the canceled game then.  

"We are going to have a home game on November 19," Alleva said as he frustratingly discussed the situation about trying to work with Florida and the SEC on making up the game. 

The weather-impacted game is the third time in two years a game has had problems with the weather. Last year, LSU’s home-opener against McNeese State was canceled just four minutes into the contest because of lightning. Then, in week 5, horrific flooding in the state of South Carolina forced LSU to host the Gamecocks in Tiger Stadium in a contest that was originally scheduled to be played in Columbia.

There are several coaching ties between LSU and Southern Miss. LSU special teams coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto served in that same capacity, along with coaching outside linebackers for Southern Miss, in 1992-93; Southern Miss head coach Jay Hopson served as a graduate assistant on the LSU staff under Curley Hallman in 1994; and USM special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach John Wozniak spent two seasons (2005 and 2007) at LSU serving as an offensive graduate assistant in 2005 and offensive quality control in 2007.

Saturday's game will be the third-ever meeting between LSU and Southern Miss on the football field; it's the first meeting between the two teams since 1994. The series between the two is tied at 1-1, with 43 years spanning the first two meetings and 22 years since the last time the two teams met. Every game of the series has been played in Baton Rouge.

LSU won the first meeting against the Golden Eagles in 1951, 13-0; Southern Miss earned the second win in the series in 1994, 20-18.
