WHITE CASTLE - State Police reported a crash in Iberville Parish that left one dead after a car ran a stop sign and was hit by a tow truck.

Troopers identified the victim of the wreck as 19-year-old Orthello Batiste, of White Castle.

State Police say the crash happened on LA 1 at the intersection of Corporal Herman Brown Jr Street as Batiste failed to yield at a stop sign while traveling westbound. His vehicle was struck by a tow truck driven by 36-year-old Russell Gerace Jr.

Batiste was wearing a seatbelt, but he sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office. The passenger in Batiste’s vehicle was not wearing a seatbelt, and they received serious injuries in the crash. The tow truck driver received only minor injuries.

Impairment is not suspected as a factor in the crash, but a toxicology sample will be taken from both drivers for analysis at the State Police Crime Lab.
