Apple's latest iOS software update will soon allow users to register themselves for organ donation directly from their iPhone.

On Tuesday, the company announced that when iOS 10 launches in the fall, iPhone and iPad users can register through the updated Health app.

Users can add themselves to the National Donate Life Registry, managed by Donate Life America, using the Medical ID feature in the updated version of the app.

The Medical ID feature in the Health app serves as a tool that allows users to input their birth date, height, blood type, emergency contact, allergies and medical conditions, which all appears on the iPhone's lock screen in case of emergencies.

"With the updated Health app, we're providing education and awareness about organ donation and making it easier than ever to register," Apple's chief operating officer, Jeff Williams, said in a statement released by the company. "It's a simple process that takes just a few seconds and could help save up to eight lives."

The official release of the iOS 10 update will be available this fall along with the new iPhone.

"By working with Apple to bring the National Donate Life Registry to the Health app on iPhone, we're making it easier for people to find out about organ, eye and tissue donation and quickly register," Donate Life America CEO David Fleming said in a statement on the organization's website. "This is a huge step forward that will ultimately help save lives."
