WALKER - Expansion work on Interstate 12 in Walker should be finished by October, according to the Department of Transportation and Development.

The $26.5 million expansion started last year and will bring I-12 from four lanes to six lanes from Walker to nearly Satsuma. For motorists in Livingston Parish going east or west on I-12 can be a pain. That's why they're looking forward to extra lanes.

"It's a positive move. It's been needed for a long, long time. So looking back you always wanted it before it was needed, but it's a good thing," said Lana Sykes. " It's very exciting. We have a lot of growth in this parish, and there's a lot of traffic that goes through on a daily, weekly basis. Traffic is constantly an issue when you have to plan to go anywhere."

The extra lanes are nearly finished, and contractors plan to get them done in the next month. DOTD says the statewide plan calls from six lanes on I-12 from Baton Rouge through Slidell. DOTD will continue the expansion toward Hammond when money becomes available.
