EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH - Fire crews are investigating a fatal house fire on Flag Street that left one man dead.

Coroner Beau Clark's Office identified the victim killed in the house fire to be 61-year-old Wilbert Alexander Jr. Officials say Alexander died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

Officials were called to house in the 6200 block of Flag Street around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Once the arrived on the scene they said flames could be seen billowing out from the front of the home.

Fire crews learned that there were two people trapped in the home at the time of the blaze, it was was a woman and Wilbert Alexander Jr. The woman was able to escape, but Alexander was found dead in a bedroom. Fire officials say that there is evidence showing that he tried to escape as well.

Louisiana State Fire Marshal Butch Browning says they have a good idea of how the fire started.

"We believe the fire started because of unattended cooking. We believe there was cooking going on on the stove and perhaps someone forgot the stove was on. We're not really sure, but that's where the fire started," he said.

Browning says there were no working smoke alarms inside the home. Central Fire Department also assisted BRFD in containing the blaze.

Officials are still investigating the incident.
