GONZALES - A grand jury will hear a case involving allegations that Ascension Parish President Kenny Matassa bribed a man to not run for a seat on the Gonzales City Council.

The grand jury will meet on November 15th, sources told WBRZ News 2 Friday. In September, the district attorney, Ricky Babin, said he was finishing the case and was expecting to present it to the grand jury by the end of the year.

The investigation started before the flood, but was slowed as heavily damaged Ascension Parish worked to rebuild.

"We had our three lead investigators in the case suffered substantial damage," Babin said."So it did slow us up a bit, but we're meeting again frequently."

Babin updated the case in a recent interview with WBRZ.

Matassa has kept quiet about the allegations, but his attorney has said the situation was not a bribe.

"The word bribe is being loosely used here. It's personal advice from one friend to another, not a bribe at all," Matassa's attorney, Lance Unglesby has said in previous WBRZ reports.

"We will put this in front of a grand jury and the grand jury will hear all the evidence we have," Babin has said.
