LAKE CHARLES – One of two funerals scheduled Saturday for murdered Southern University students will take place in this southwest Louisiana city.

LaShuntae Benton was laid to rest around noon. Visitation started at 9 a.m. A wake was held the day before.

Annette January was buried almost simultaneously at a service 1,000 miles away in January's hometown outside Chicago, Illinois - a community in Indiana.

Benton and January were shot and killed Sunday at The Cottages complex on Ben Hur Drive in Baton Rouge. Both were bystanders who were hit in a shootout. Police have said Ernest Felton, a Southern football recruit and part-time student was exchanging gunfire with Brandon Henderson, 24, in the parking lot of the complex.

Only Felton has been charged. He was booked into jail after the shooting on charges related to Henderson's shooting injuries. No one faces charges for the deaths of the two women. Police said they are awaiting ballistics tests to determine which bullets struck and killed Benton and January.

Felton was able to post a $90,000 bond Tuesday but was arrested and booked back into jail after he was found to have left the city – a violation of his bond release.

Henderson has been released from the hospital.
