NEW ROADS - Authorities have confirmed that an elderly man was found dead inside his home Wednesday due to ice-cold conditions in Southeast Louisiana.

According to the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Office, 84-year-old Paul Maker was found dead in a wheelchair inside his home on St. Peter Street Wednesday morning. The coroner has determined that Maker died of hypothermia.

The sheriff's office says a space heater was found inside the house, but it was not being used.

Authorities say his wife, who's in her 70s, was also found inside the home, near hypothermia herself. She was taken to an area hospital.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
