EBRSO: Victim defends himself against murder attempt with shovel, suspect arrested

BATON ROUGE - East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office arrested 30-year-old Juan Vasquez for attempted murder of a man in the 3700 block of Victoria Drive.
According to the EBR sheriff’s office, the incident occurred on Tuesday, Mar. 8, at around 3 p.m. when officers responded to three men fighting outside of a store.
Police say that the victim stated he was confronted in front of the store near a trailer park by Vasquez and another male, Juan Omar Delgado.
According to the sheriff’s office, Vasquez told the victim that he was going to kill him as pay back for a fight the men had months before.Both Vasquez and Delgado pulled out machetes and chased the victim to a nearby trailer.
The victim ran on a porch when Vasquez and Delgado started swinging the machetes and Delgado hit the victim in the leg with a hammer, police say.Vasquez then tried to strike the victim with the machete while the victim was on the ground, however the victim was able to defend himself by hitting Vasquez in the head with a nearby shovel.
The victim was then able to get away, according to police.Detectives were later able to locate surveillance video from the store where the incident began and Delgado admitted to accompanying Vasquez in the incident.
Vasquez was transported to Our Lady of the Lake hospital with life threatening injuries and was arrested for attempted second degree murder.
