Deadline for flood insurance claims nears
BATON ROUGE - The deadline is quickly approaching for flood insurance policyholders who flooded in the August 2016 flood.
The National Flood Insurance Program, a federal program within FEMA, warned that insurers have until Dec. 31 to submit proof of loss documentation to initiate or supplement an NFIP claim.
"If you don't get your claim in, you're going be barred. You may not get any recovery at all," said Ron Henderson with the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
To request more funds, you must notify your adjuster that you need payment, and your insurance company will provide you with another Proof of Loss form.
"Let the adjuster know, 'look I have a supplemental claim. These are the extra things that you guys hadn't paid for that I need to be reimbursed for,'" Henderson explained.
Nearly 30,000 claims have been filed with NFIP so far. Fifty-four out of 64 Louisiana parishes flooded last year.
"I think people need to get on it, get on the deadline, and get it cause without it lose everything," Henderson said.
