BURLINGTON, Vermont - The co-founder of world renowned Vermont-based ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s has pulled back the curtain on a limited-edition flavor sure to chill out your tastebuds if you've been “feeling the Bern.”

"Nothing is so unstoppable as a flavor whose time has finally come," said Ben Cohen, Ben & Jerry’s co-founder, as he unveiled the new flavor, dubbed Bernie’s Yearning.

Only available in an extremely limited production run of 40 pints (which means you probably won't get to try any), the cardboard container features an image of the Vermont senator and presidential hopeful on the outside with a delightfully symbolic mint/chocolate concoction contained inside. The ice cream’s composition is designed to playfully demonstrate the massive wealth inequalities that the Sanders campaign aims to take down.

"The entire top of this pint is covered with a thick disc of solid chocolate," reads the label on a pint of Bernie’s Yearning. "Underneath is mint ice cream. The chocolate disc represents the huge majority of economic gains that have gone to the top 1% since the end of the recession. Beneath it, the rest of us.”

The co-found says the “participatory” process of preparing and eating the ice cream is a play on the concept of wealth redistribution that is so near and dear to the heart of Sanders' democratic socialist platform. You “smash” the smaller amount of chocolate (representing money) and “distribute” it through the rest of the mint ice cream (representing us…well, most of us anyway).

Cohen is a long-time supporter of the presidential candidate. He said he finally came to the decision to design Bernie’s Yearning after his Vermont-based company was repeatedly asked if they would be producing a flavor with a Sanders theme. The product is Cohen’s creation though, and isn’t formally affiliated with Ben & Jerry’s, according to a statement on the Sanders campaign website.

25 of the 40 produced pints were given to the Sanders campaign. The rest will be auctioned off, but there is a contest to win one of the tubs live on the Sanders website.

The release of “Bernie’s Yearning” comes just a few days ahead of the hotly anticipated Iowa caucus, which is scheduled for Feb. 1. If you're generally in the market for Bernie swag, be sure to snag a pair of Bernie's Briefs to proudly wear (under your pants) to the polls in November.
