VENTRESS - A 58-year-old Jarreau man was killed after he crashed into a tree on his birthday Tuesday evening.

According to Louisiana State Police, the incident happened shortly before 7:00 p.m. in the 9200 Block of Island Road, or LA 413.

The crash claimed the life of Joseph Cador, 58, of Jarreau.

Through the initial investigation, State Police determined the crash occurred as Cador was traveling northbound on LA 413 in a 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle.

Cador was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when a tire failed on his vehicle, according to State Police. Cador failed to maintain control of his vehicle and ran off the right side of the roadway. His vehicle came to a stop after striking a tree on its driver's side.

Cador was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pointe Coupee Parish Coroner's Office.

It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash. A toxicology sample will be taken from Cador for analysis.

Family tells WBRZ the man was on his way to his mother's house to celebrate his birthday when he lost control of the vehicle.

Authorities say the car hit a natural gas line, causing a leak. It appears that leak has since been fixed.
