Watch raw video of Collins Ryan leaving dinner
BATON ROUGE - Embattled former LSU standout La'el Collins quickly left dinner with Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan Monday evening without saying much.
Collins left Ruffino's on Highland Road and was followed closely behind by Ryan. Both men got into the same shiny SUV and drove off with Collins and a small entourage.
"God is good," Collins said as he shuffled himself into the back of the SUV, just before the door was closed by someone who later got into the front passenger's seat. Ryan provided no comment to WBRZ's Brett Buffington who tried to ask the pair questions live on WBRZ News 2 at 10:00 Monday evening. WBRZ was the only local news station outside the restaurant as the pair left.
For Ryan, the evening started about two-and-a-half hours earlier, when his private jet landed at the airport in Baton Rouge. Collins dinner, though, was a week in the making after losing any hope of being selected in the NFL draft when his name was connected to a murder investigation. At first, an expected top pick in last week's selection, Collins quickly faded when police announced they wanted to talk to him about his relationship with Brittney Mills, a 29-year-old murder victim. Mills was pregnant when she was shot in Baton Rouge and her baby survived for a week at an area hospital after the shooting.
A source at the restaurant told WBRZ, Collins and Ryan ordered lobster appetizers as they waited for members of Collins' family to join them for dinner.
Police have said Collins is not a suspect in their murder investigation. His attorney, Jim Boren of Baton Rouge, maintained Collins' record was clear.
Collins met with police Monday. Cpl. Don Coppola of Baton Rouge Police said Collins and his attorney met with investigators at around 10:30 a.m. and was fully cooperative in answering detectives' questions.
"He's not a suspect, he answered all the questions that they had. He didn't claim the 5th. We gave them all the information they asked for and he's ready to get his life back," Boren said following Collins' meeting with detectives.
