PORT ALLEN - State traffic managers are testing a new, partly digital road sign that will provide drivers with commute times.

The sign has been installed on northbound La. 1 but is not provided real-time information. A DOTD spokesperson said there is no date on when the sign will be fully operational.

The sign will list travel times for drivers to help them determine how long it will take to get across the river using either the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge or the Old Bridge where Highway 190 crosses the river. DOTD hopes the sign will help change commutes - sometimes convincing drivers to go north and use Highway 190 instead of clogging I-10.

The sign is part of an overall upgrade of traffic information available to drivers in the Baton Rouge area. Digital boards on I-10 East before LA-415, US-190 East before LA-415, I-10 West before LA-415, I-10 West before Essen Lane and I-12 West before Juban will also have the time-of-travel capability.
