Sheriff's office identifies retired deputy killed in Zachary crash

ZACHARY - Authorities say a retired deputy with East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office was killed in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning in Zachary.

The man has been identified as Claude Smith. He was employed with the department from May 2003 to February 2017.

The crash was reported before after 6 a.m. at the intersection of Tucker Road and Jackson Road. According to the sheriff's office, one vehicle crossed the center line and hit the second vehicle head on.

Authorities didn't say which vehicle Smith was in. A second person was transported to a local hospital with a broken leg.

The crash remains under investigation.
