Senator Kennedy calls BRAVE deals 'repulsive'
BATON ROUGE - Amid multiple requests for a state investigation into the BRAVE grant program, U.S. Senator John Kennedy sent a letter to Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome voicing his concerns about the allegations.
In the letter, Sen. Kennedy says "the purpose of the BRAVE contracts is to reduce violent crime and support law enforcement efforts. The fact that our federal tax dollars have gone to someone like Arthur 'Silky' Slim Reed is downright repulsive."
Just a few weeks ago, justice advocate "Silky Slim" said that justice was delivered last year when Gavin Long murdered three law enforcement officers and injured others. The mayor's office ended its partnership with him amid controversy over the remakrs.
Kennedy continues in the letter asking Broome to ensure that remaining BRAVE funds are used correctly.
Kennedy also asked for a list of BRAVE-related contracts and transactions funded with taxpayer's money.
Earlier this week, the mayor said she will evaluate all contracts and expects to make a public announcement on Monday.
The mayor said: "I think public interest is extremely important, and I support public engagement and transparency. I or the chief administrative officer will continue to do what I stated last week, which is to review every contract that comes through the Office of the Mayor-President to ensure quality, cost-effective services for the people of East Baton Rouge Parish. In addition, I have directed my administration to prepare a comprehensive report related to BRAVE contracts, projects and funding. We will provide a status report to the media no later than Monday, August 7."
