BATON ROUGE - Two private donors have gifted McKinley High School the funds to pay off fines issued by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, as well as to buy new equipment for its student-athletes.

According to a memo from Principal Esrom Pitre, the donors gave a total of $62,000 to the school's athletics program. About $20,000 of that donation has been designated to pay off fines handed down by the LHSAA over missing and incomplete documentation for some of its players last year.

The principal identified the donors as Kristina and John Miremont.

The school was originally ordered to pay more than $40,000 in fines, but that was cut in half earlier this year after the school appealed the disciplinary action. The original disciplinary action also entailed player suspensions, but those were overturned.

The rest of the donation will be used to pay for new athletic equipment and meals for student-athletes.
