BATON ROUGE - Authorities responded to an overnight shooting near LSU’s campus.

The university's emergency alert system sent out a message around 1:30 a.m. Friday warning students of the incident on Nicholson Drive between North Stadium Road and West Chimes Street.

LSUPD said the victim was not a student. The university told WBRZ that the person injured was a rideshare driver. The unidentified person was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

There was a passenger inside the car when the driver was shot, but he was not the shooter. Authorities say someone else was involved, but aren’t giving any further details.

Students who walk around the area often are concerned to hear what happened.

“It was definitely surprising. Campus is typically fairly safe so I was surprised,” said Michael Thrower, a second-year law student.

“It is kind of scary,” added Nathalie Tardiff, an LSU freshman. “Nothing against Uber or Lyft because it could happen to anybody. It’s just scary that it is a commonly used thing and that just happened.”
