BATON ROUGE- LSU has announced plans to change several street names as it aims to give physical addresses to campus buildings as part of its roadway modernization plan.

Among the streets being renamed is Raphael Semmes, a road named after a Confederate officer. The roadway street sign was changed to Veterans Drive Monday night.

"A number of streets are being changed or altered to aid in wayfinding on campus and help us to get physical addresses," an LSU spokesperson told WBRZ Monday.

The release also stated that during the review process, research was conducted on those who have campus roadways named after them and their contribution to the university. Officials said the majority had little to no significant connection to LSU and were named without a formal process. The one exception is Skip Bertman Drive.

LSU scheduled the changing out of street signs to take place following the conclusion of the home football season.
