BATON ROUGE- LA 1 is soon to get a new sign telling drivers how long it will take for them to be in traffic.

The sign will tell drivers how long it will take to cross the river using the new bridge or the old bridge over Highway 190.

The sign is a part of a $3.4 million project to improve the current signs around the city.

Rodney Mallett, DOTD spokesperson, said the signs will give drivers more options on the road.

“If its about a wreck, travel time, road construction, more information is better for your travelers,” Mallett said.

The state hopes the information on the signs will encourage drivers to use Highway 190 when the I-10 is backed up because the old bridge is under-used, while the new bridge is over-used.

However, some drivers do not believe the signs will be enough.

“It’s ridiculous the way they built that bridge the way they did," driver George Griggs said. “They could solve it real easy by adding another lane going east, and blocking off traffic going south coming in from the airport,” he said.

The state, however, said that money for the signs has to go to intelligent traffic systems and it can not be used for construction.

“Well you cant put another lane on the bridge for $3.4 million, thats for sure, for a state wide information program, this is a good value because this is going to be able to provide information to people who live in the area, people who pass through the area, and its part of an overall plan,” Mallett said.

According to the state, the sign at LA 1 will go live next week and they hope to add drive times to more signs in the future.
