BATON ROUGE – Mayor-President elect Sharon Weston Broome took the oath of office at her inauguration ceremony on Monday afternoon.

The ceremony began at 5 p.m. at the Baton Rouge River Center Theatre for Performing Arts.

Broome's inauguration events kicked off on Sunday at 6 p.m. with a Celebration of Faith at Star Hill Church. At the celebration, Broome said that she wants her term as mayor to be described as unifying and that the first thing she will do once in office is have a "great staff meeting."

"We will be hitting the ground running," Broome said.

Immediately following Broome's inauguration, the new Mayor-President hosted a "Celebrate Baton Rouge" event at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center located at 201 Lafayette Street.

All of Broome's inauguration events were free and open to the public. Broome said at a press conference last week, that she wanted to inclusive and did not want anyone to feel intimidated to participate in the events.

According to Broome's transition team, the events were held at no cost to taxpayers.

Broome is the first woman to be elected as Mayor-President in East Baton Rouge Parish. Broome will serve a four-year term and succeed Melvin "Kip" Holden, who served from 2005 to 2016.
