BAKER - Administrators who are over the 175 students at Bakerfield Elementary School are all on alert.

The school is under a fire watch because the fire alarm system is broken.

The discovery was first made in August, during a routine fire drill. Every since then, the two custodians who are employed there walk the halls throughout the day making sure there are no fire hazards inside of the building.

"Every 30 minutes they make observation rounds around the school," said Principal Candace Jenkins.

The fire department is on standby just in case an emergency situation takes place at the school.

"They position themselves around the school to make sure everyone exit and just to assist us because they know the ordeal we're going through right now," said Principal Jenkins.

A new fire alarm system, which may cost around $20,000, should be installed at the beginning of the year. The school board is looking for bidders right now to install it.
