INDEPENDENCE - Families roamed Yawn Station Christmas Tree Farm in search of the perfect holiday tree Saturday. The weekend after Thanksgiving is usually the busiest period for Joe Gersch and his wife Kay.

"In the past few days I've decided we won't be open long this year," Joe Gersch said.

Thousands of trees of all shapes and sizes cover dozens of acres of property. Some are native to Louisiana while others were flown in from North Carolina last week.

"They're always perfect even though I know they're not," Gersch said. "There is no such thing as a perfect tree."

Gersch sees several of the customers every year. The Matherne family from Walker has made Yawn's a part of their holiday tradition.

"This is probably our fourth or fifth year out here," Elizabeth Matherne said.

Christmas may be a month away, however, Gersch says he expects most of his selection to be gone within the coming week.

"When they call I tell them it's going to be a short supply," Gersch said. "If you want the prettiest, perfect tree, come early."

Yawn's has been selling Christmas trees the old-fashioned way since 2009. Matherne says her kids look forward to it every year.

"It's just a great way to start our Christmas season," Matherne said.
