NEW ORLEANS - Family members of a man from Louisiana inside Pulse nightclub learned Monday he had survived the shooting but was severely injured.

Leonel Melendez is in a coma after being shot in the leg and head. Melendez lists the New Orleans area as his hometown on Facebook and was a graduate of a New Orleans area high school, too.

Family members flew to Florida Sunday and are at his side, New Orleans area media outlets reported Monday. A GoFund Me account for medical expenses has raised $5,000 so far.

Melendez worked in retail in the Orlando area, his Facebook profile reports.

Melendez is one of the 53 people who were injured in the mass shooting at the nightclub Sunday morning. Forty-nine people died, authorities said.

Also Monday, the Lafayette-area newspaper reported a man from Acadiana was also at the club, was shot and died. Frank Hernandez, 27, was identified Monday by the city of Orlando as a victim, the Advertiser reported. The paper reported the man has family who still lives in Lafayette. A GoFund Me account has also been set up to pay for funeral costs.
